Introducing Apothic Inferno: Wine with a Whiskey Soul

A pioneer in creating innovative blends that push the envelope of what is expected from a wine, Apothic takes its fans on a new journey to experience wine in a whole new way. By combining years of wine-making knowledge and expertise with innovative techniques inspired by the time-honored craft of whiskey-making, Apothic is bringing a masterful and unexpected taste experience to wine and whiskey fans alike with its new, small-batch, limited release red blend, Apothic Inferno.

Aged in charred, white oak whiskey barrels for 60 days, Apothic Inferno blends the red and dark fruit flavors of its wine with layers of maple and spice, giving way to a long, clean finish. “The result is a wine with rich flavor and distinctive attitude,” says Apothic Winemaker, Debbie Juergenson. “It may not have whiskey in it, but it’s wine with a whiskey soul.”

Crafted in California, each batch of Apothic Inferno undergoes a time-intensive, barrel-aging process. The unique character and flavor profiles offer wine enthusiasts the opportunity to discover a bold, new experience. The barrels – cut, shaped, and bound by steel before being charred with flames – were first used to age whiskey for years prior to becoming the home of Apothic’s new red blend.

“Those who have come to love Apothic know that we’re always looking to defy convention with unique blends and bold flavors,” said Christine Jagher, Marketing Director for Apothic Wines. “Apothic Inferno brings a rebellious attitude to the wine category – even the label’s dark colors and intertwined graphics elicit a fiery style, the perfect addition to our portfolio.”

Apothic Inferno is available on shelves wherever wine is sold, nationwide, for a limited time with a suggested retail price of $16.99. The wine has an ABV of 15.9% and is offered in 750ml bottles.

NEW: Barefoot launches Refresh Spritzers in cans

Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, a brand of E.J. Gallo Winery, Modesto, Calif., announced the national launch of Barefoot Refresh Spritzers in convenient, portable cans. The canned wines let people take wine many places where it couldn’t go before, the company says.

“This is such an exciting moment for us here at Barefoot, and also for wine fans across the country,” said Jen Wall, winemaker for Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, in a statement. “It’s all about making Barefoot convenient. We took this ‘step’ to give folks summer in a can at any time of year and to take away some of the barriers for enjoying wine when and where people want.”

The 8.4-ounce slim cans can go many places where wine bottles and glass aren’t always welcome. The cans easily pack into coolers and ice chests, and are ideal for poolside, the beach, barbecues and more, the company says.

Barefoot Refresh Spritzers, made in the classic spritzer style, are a refreshing wine-based beverage with a signature spritz. Available in Crisp White and Summer Red, Refresh Spritzers can be served over ice, mixed in a cocktail or straight from a chilled can, it adds.

“One of our missions at Barefoot is to make the everyday more fun and to make life, and wine, less serious,” Wall said. “I genuinely believe people around the country will love our Refresh Spritzers in cans and they’ll love all the places they can take them.”

The new canned sparkling wines have a suggested retail price of $8.99 for a four-pack or $2.49 for singles, and now are available nationwide.

Everyone can now enjoy Motto wines, a collection of distinct, dark, rich wines from California that deliver a definitively bold wine experience and flavors unlike any others. Motto wines offer a new take on California winemaking from the perspective of the renowned winemaking team at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, known for producing some of the best-selling wines from Washington State. Motto wines are available in three varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Red Blend.

“We wanted to put a Washington spin on California wines, so we implemented the same approach we use for our Washington wines, but with California grapes,” said Motto winemaker Reid Klei, who has worked in the Washington winemaking industry for Ste. Michelle Wines Estates for 10 years.

“I have been making wine in Washington for my entire career so I came into the Motto wines with no preconceived notions or ideas of how California wines should be made,” continued Klei. “I entered it with a blank slate and was able to sit down, taste the wines and really focus on the wines and all their characteristics and put together blends and combinations of things I thought tasted well together. I think this makes the Motto wines a little different and gives them a unique spin.”

Each of the three varietals boasts a distinct character – BACKBONE™, UNABASHED™ and GUNG HO™ – creating a bold experience with every sip.

  • The 2013 Backbone Cabernet Sauvignon has a strong, determined flavor with dark, concentrated notes of red plum, caramel and bright raspberry that explode out of the glass for a lasting finish.
  • The 2013 Unabashed Zinfandel boasts proud and striking scents of soft leather, revealing flavors of chocolate covered raspberries and a touch of spice.
  • The 2013 Gung Ho Red Blend excites the palate quickly, full of zealous and enthusiastic fruitful flavors of blueberry, pomegranate and spice.

In addition to crafting unique blends, the Motto winemaking team has thought of different ways to defy ordinary by taking a new approach to making California wine, including:

  • Keeping wine lots separate throughout fermentation and aging.
  • Determining final blends right before bottling, once the wines have evolved to reveal all their true character and complexities.
  • Fermenting at a higher temperature, 85 degrees Fahrenheit, for a shorter period of time of 6-7 days on skins. At this point the wine is moved off of the skins and the juice finishes fermenting without any skins present, therefore not extracting anything else. This helps the wines stay more balanced and lends a more elegant flavor profile.
  • Oxygen is added at various points during fermentation to help create the fresh aromas and dark, rich color of Motto wines.

The Motto collection is now available nationwide and at www.MottoWines.com

NEW: XO, G Moscato

xog-moscatoGiuliana Rancic has added Moscato as a new varietal to her wine brand, Xo, G. Available on select Walmart shelves in late spring 2015, the new Moscato is a semi-sweet wine with big, beautiful aromas of ripe peaches, a touch of honey sweetness and a wonderfully refreshing finish. Packaged in an innovative bottle designed for by-the-glass consumption, Xo, G consists of four prefilled, individually sealed, shatterproof, stemless wine glasses that snap together to form a perfect equivalent of a 750mL bottle, wonderful for those who prefer just one glass.

After the success of the initial launch of Xo, G with the Italian Pinot Grigio and the French Rose and Pinot Noir, Rancic was excited to add a Californian wine as a new addition to her wine brand. Rancic was looking to fill the high demand from consumers for a sweeter taste that has been trending in the wine industry. Perfect for summer, Moscato is fruity and sweet in flavor but still light and crisp.

“After hearing the positive reaction from consumers with the initial launch, I did an extensive amount of outreach through social media to find out what new flavors the Xo, G wine buyers wanted,” shares Giuliana Rancic. “As the wine industry is steering towards the sweeter flavors like Riesling and Sparkling Prosecco, it was no surprise that Xo, G consumers were demanding for a fruity Moscato.”

The California Moscato will hit shelves in late Spring and will be sold alongside the ever-so popular Xo, G Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, and Rose.
