February 14, 2014 is rapidly approaching.
Wine? Wine? WINE?!?!?!? No worries there are plenty of places to visit and try the latest offerings. Most of you have a favorite spot to purchase your “liquid courage.” Be it a local Kenwood or Binny’s or that spot around the corner, this weekend you will be bombarded with tasting opportunities galore.
This weekend stop by your favorite Jewel, Ultra Foods, Strack & Van Til’s or CVS (yes CVS) and try out some of the offerings from wines and sparkling wines to Tequila.
Don’t forget to take a look around. This time of the year stores begin to realign their inventory and drastically slashes prices on product didn’t do as well as others. Example – a local Jewel-Osco recently sold Jack Daniels Winter Jack retail price $16.99, clearance $4.00. (Really? REALLY? And no one called me?)
September 2011 Bacardi introduced OakHeart, a smooth spiced rum. Dare I say that I was skeptical, never happy with the taste, smell and look of most spiced rums as they often remind me of “liquid gingerbread.” Then along came Bacardi OakHeart…..duh, duh DUHNNNNNN. Personally I fell in love. I tried the recommended Oak & Coke – smooth, easy-peasy. Then I thought why not in a rum punch. Using OakHeart instead of gold in the recipe elevated it to a level my taste buds had never heard of.
Recipes to try:
Oak ‘n’ Coke
1½ ounces Bacardi OakHeart Rum
3-4 ounces Coke
Oak and Ginger
3-4 ounces ginger ale or ginger beer
Fresh lime, squeezed
Oak and Apple Cider
3-4 ounces apple cider
