Traditionally garnished with half an orange and a maraschino cherry, a whiskey sour is a mixed drink containing whiskey (often Bourbon), lemon juice and sugar. Whiskey sours are shaken then either served straight or over ice.

The Whiskey Sour has withstood the test of time!

An 1870 Wisconsin newspaper has the world’s oldest historical mention of a whiskey sour.

After opening, a bottle of whiskey will remain good for five years.

A unopened bottle of whiskey can be kept for over 100 years and will still be good to drink.

Within our research, we were unable to find the creator or the origin of National Whiskey Sour Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

THE RECIPES

An option to the traditional whiskey sour is the Boston sour which is made by adding a dash of egg white to the recipe. Another variant is the Ward 8. The Ward 8 is based with either Bourbon or rye whiskey with both lemon and orange juices added along with grenadine syrup for the sweetener.

NEW: Glenfiddich 1963

Glenfiddich is planning a November-December launch for a second newcomer, 1963, which will be a non-age-stated “replica” of the first single malt marketed by the distillery. Glenfiddich malt master Brian Kinsman has been pulling from various casks to match the archived liquid and ledger notes from that historic offering in the finished product of 1963, which will retail around $100.

“At the time, there was an assumption in Scotland that customers wanted blends,” Ralph says. “But Sandy Gordon (then chairman of William Grant), decided that the whisky at Glenfiddich needed to be available for people to try in its native state, and inadvertently he created the global single malt category. This will be a very stripped-down single malt that will allow people to try the real house style of Glenfiddich.”

Heaven Hill Distilleries has extended its liqueur stable with a new holiday seasonal offering, Hpnotiq Sparkle. A multifaceted marketing campaign featuring reality TV star Khloe Karhashian will support the new release, which like Hpnotiq Liqueur is a blend of fruit juices, white wine, vodka and Cognac, but with Champagne-like bubbles.

STATS: Sparkle, which is 12.5% abv (25proof), is available in 750-ml. bottles at a price point of $19.99.
